9-Day Private RV Journey: Ili Grasslands, Tianshan Landscapes, Turpan Desert & Sayram Lake

Combine RV, bullet train and VIP access for Ili grasslands, Turpan desert and Sayram Lake – sleep in style.
Why this route works
- 🚐 The RV is the soul of this route — here's what it gives you:
- Four nights of RV camping, each in a different landscape — Nalati River Valley, Kuerdunin, Kalajun, and Sayram Lake Command Platform. Regular tourists enter these scenic areas at 9am, queue for shuttle buses, squeeze through 3-4 crowded hours, and are cleared out by 6pm. Your RV drives in after the crowds have left — you stay until the next morning. Sunset, a sky full of stars, and sunrise, all from your own doorstep, with no one else around. No hotel on earth can offer this.
- The RV is both your transport AND your room for the entire Ili section (D3-D8). By day it carries you along the legendary Duku Highway, through Nalati's two grasslands, Kuerdunin's spruce forests, Kalajun's highlands, and around Sayram Lake; by night it becomes your bedroom in the middle of the scenery. No packing up, no driving 1-2 hours back to a hotel — the scenery is outside your window all night.
- VIP drive-in to five scenic areas. Nalati (Valley Grassland + Sky Meadow), Kuerdunin, Kalajun, and Sayram Lake — the RV drives straight through the VIP gate. No shuttle queues, no transfers, no long walks. While others wait in line, you just go.
- Private bathroom, always available. Clean flush toilet and hot shower on board — no worrying about public toilets on the Duku Highway or deep in the grasslands. Drink water freely, no rationing.
- You don't drive — your driver is your trip host. A professional driver-guide handles every mountain road and everything around it: camp setup, hot pot dinner at sunset, drone photos of your family, luggage, check-ins. You simply enjoy.
- Fully flexible nights. If you ever prefer a hotel over the RV on a camping night, the driver takes you — no questions asked. Camping and hotels are combined by design, so you get the scenery AND the comfort.
- The four RV camping nights — each in a completely different landscape:
- Night 1 — Nalati River Valley: The classic Ili grassland. Sleep in the valley, wake up to the morning mist rising over the meadows. The next day, the same RV takes you VIP into the Sky Meadow.
- Night 2 — Kuerdunin: Under the spruce forests. The air is cool and pine-scented. A completely different atmosphere from the open grasslands.
- Night 3 — Kalajun: The highest of the four grasslands. Sleep at 2,000m+, with the stars closer than you've ever seen them. Watch the sunset paint the entire prairie golden.
- Night 4 — Sayram Lake Command Platform: Overlooking Xinjiang's most beautiful alpine lake. Wake up to the famous golden mountain sunrise reflected on the water — the iconic image of Xinjiang.
- Plus the desert day before the RV starts — the Kumtag Desert by high-speed rail round trip. This gives you a complete Northern Xinjiang experience in just 9 days: desert, canyon, three grasslands, a legendary highway, and Xinjiang's most beautiful lake.
- 🍽️ Meals on the road — simple, delicious, zero cooking:
- The RV has a full kitchen and fridge, but you never have to cook. Before entering the scenic areas, your driver stops at local markets where you pick up ready-made food — roasted lamb, hand-pulled noodles, naan — plus fresh fruit and nuts. At the campsite, your driver sets up a picnic under the open sky: sunset over the grassland, a table of good food, no cooking, no dishes. Want the full experience? Buy hot pot ingredients at the market and the driver cooks a steaming hot pot right at the camp. Meals become part of the scenery.
- 🚄✈️ Smart transport — high-speed rail for the desert day, then the RV takes over for the Ili scenic heart:
- This route is a clever combination of three transport modes, each doing what it does best — and at just 9 days, it's the most time-efficient way to experience the full diversity of Northern Xinjiang.
- Urumqi → Shanshan (high-speed rail round trip, D2): Depart Urumqi in the morning by bullet train — about 1.5 hours to Shanshan. A business van meets you at the station and takes you VIP into the Kumtag Desert, the Tuyugou Grand Canyon, and the Grape Valley. After sightseeing, take the bullet train back to Urumqi in the evening. Driving this route means 6 hours on a boring Gobi highway — the bullet train saves you 3+ hours of road time and lets you arrive fresh.
- RV (D3-D8): The RV takes over for the entire Ili section — Duku Highway, Nalati, Kuerdunin, Kalajun, Guozigou Bridge, and Sayram Lake. These are the roads worth driving, and you drive every metre of them with VIP access.
- Business van (D1, D9): Handles airport transfers and the final departure.
- The result: 1 high-speed rail round trip for the desert + RV for the Ili scenic heart = you experience the Kumtag Desert, the Duku Highway, three of Ili's greatest grasslands (Nalati, Kuerdunin, Kalajun), and Sayram Lake — all in just 9 days, without a single exhausting drive, with 4 nights sleeping inside the scenery.
- 🏨 Accommodation — 8 nights, 4 nights 5-diamond hotels + 4 nights RV camping inside the scenery:
- Urumqi Four Points by Sheraton 5-diamond 3 nights (unpack once, D1, D2, D8), Nalati River Valley RV camp 1 night (D3), Kuerdunin wild-luxury camp 1 night (D4), Kalajun wild-luxury camp 1 night (D5), Yining EVEN Hotel 5-diamond 1 night (D6), Sayram Lake Command Platform RV camp 1 night (D7). Four nights in brand-name 5-diamond hotels (Four Points by Sheraton, EVEN Hotel by IHG) for luxurious rest, four nights sleeping inside the most beautiful landscapes of Ili. Urumqi 3 nights means you always return to a proper hotel rest. This is the perfect balance — city comfort and wilderness immersion.
- 🏜️ Scenic highlights — every stop earns its place:
- Kumtag Desert & Turpan (D2): By high-speed rail — VIP access to the Kumtag Desert, the Tuyugou Grand Canyon's red cliffs, and the Grape Valley oasis. Three landscapes in one day, all connected by short van rides.
- Duku Highway & Nalati (D3-D4): The legendary Tianshan crossing with Dushanzi Grand Canyon, then the River Valley and Sky Meadow grasslands by VIP drive-in. Sleep in the valley, drive the Sky Meadow the next day.
- Kuerdunin (D4): Spruce forests and snow mountains. VIP drive-in, camp under the pine trees. A completely different atmosphere from the open grasslands.
- Kalajun (D5-D6): One of Ili's most spectacular grasslands — rolling hills, wildflowers, and snow-capped peaks. Camp inside the scenic area, watch the sunset paint the entire prairie golden. Then visit Falcon Terrace, pass through the Bagua City of Tekes, and explore Yining's Six-Star Street.
- Sayram Lake (D7-D8): Xinjiang's most beautiful alpine lake, full VIP loop — Swan Lake, Songshutou, Kelayongzhu. Sleep at the Command Platform camp, wake up to golden mountains at sunrise. Drive the Guozigou Bridge on the way.
