• Urumqi → Korla (high-speed rail, D2):​ Depart Urumqi in the morning by high-speed rail — about 4 hours. A business van meets you at Korla station, takes you straight to your hotel to check in, and by evening you're refreshed enough for a leisurely stroll along the Peacock River. Driving this route means crossing the Gobi for 6 hours — by the time you reach Korla, all you want to do is lie down, not explore.
• Kuqa → Kashgar (flight, D7):​ A morning flight from Kuqa to Kashgar — about 1 hour. A business van picks you up at the airport, you check into your hotel, and by the afternoon you're already wandering through the Kashgar Old City. Without the flight, this is a 700km drive through the Taklamakan Desert — uninhabited, no fuel stations, no phone signal. It takes a full day of driving, and you'd arrive in Kashgar late at night, having wasted an entire day.
• The remaining days are all short business-van drives — the longest single stretch is about 3-4 hours between scenic spots, and even those are broken up by sightseeing stops. No day is spent fully in a vehicle. No 8-hour bus rides that leave you exhausted before you even start.
