Driving this route means 5 hours on a flat, empty Gobi highway — by the time you arrive, you're too tired to enjoy the fortress.
- Jiayuguan → Urumqi (bullet train, D6): Morning bullet train from Jiayuguan to Urumqi — about 5.5 hours. A business van meets you at the station, you check into your hotel, and you have the next full day for Tianchi Lake. Driving this route means 10+ hours on the Hexi Corridor highway — an entire day wasted on the road.
- Urumqi → Kashgar (direct flight, D8): A morning flight from Urumqi to Kashgar — about 2 hours. A business van meets you at the airport, you check into your hotel, and by the afternoon you're already wandering through the Kashgar Old City, visiting the Id Kah Mosque and the century-old teahouse. Without the flight, this is a multi-day drive across the Taklamakan Desert — or a full day on a train.
