• Altay → Urumqi (direct flight, D5):​ A morning direct flight from Altay to Urumqi — about 1.5 hours instead of a full day of highway driving. A business van meets you at the airport, and you check into your hotel by midday, refreshed and ready for the next leg of the journey. Without this flight, you'd spend an entire day on the road, exhausted before you even reach Sayram Lake.
• Ahe Highway (D2):​ Don't think of this as just a transfer — it's one of Xinjiang's most scenic roads, connecting Altay to Hemu through forests and mountain valleys. The van drives slowly, with stops for photos. The road itself is part of the experience.
• The remaining days are all short business-van drives between scenic spots — the longest single stretch is about 3-4 hours. The Duku Highway day (D9) is a scenic drive itself, with multiple stops at Qiao'erma and Dushanzi Grand Canyon, not a boring highway grind. No day is spent fully in a vehicle with nothing to see. No 8-hour bus rides.
• The result:​ 1 flight = roughly 800km of highway skipped. You start in Altay, drive the scenic Ahe Highway to Hemu, explore Kanas, then fly over the mountains to reach Sayram Lake and Nalati, before returning to Urumqi via the legendary Duku Highway. Every transfer is either a scenic drive or a short flight — no wasted days on the road.

• Kanas (D3-D4):​ The Fish Viewing Platform for a panoramic view, Kanas Lake itself, and the Three Bays — Fairy Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay — turquoise water winding through the forest. Sleep in a log cabin inside the scenic area. Then visit Rainbow Beach — colourful rock formations along the Irtysh River.
• Sayram Lake (D6-D7):​ Xinjiang's most beautiful alpine lake, full VIP loop — Swan Lake, Songshutou, Kelayongzhu. Stay at a hotel by the lake. Two days to explore, no rushing. Then drive to Yining in the evening, visit Six-Star Street for local food.
• Nalati (D8):​ One full day inside Nalati — both the River Valley Meadow and the Sky Meadow, with VIP drive-in, no shuttle queues. The driver takes you to the best viewpoints. This is the most efficient way to experience Nalati's two iconic grasslands in a single day.
